You don’t have to hold yourself hostage to who you used to be.

Three years ago next month, I lost my job in marketing when the company I worked for was acquired.
Determined to keep climbing the corporate ladder, I spent the next six months going on interviews and wondering when the next opportunity would arise.
After more interviews than I can count, and still no leads, I decided enough was enough: I knew there was a demand for my skillset, so I decided to go out and find the work myself. Shortly after, Blue Whale Communications was officially registered as a Canadian company, I launched my website, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Why am I telling you this, and what does it have to do with entrepreneurship? Because I was the last person even I expected to start a business and give up my evenings and weekends to make it succeed.
I was happy with my chosen industry, looked forward to my vacation every year, and enjoyed leaving the office at 4pm most days and being able to mentally check-out from Friday at 4pm to Monday at 8am. It felt like I was on the path I was supposed to be on, gradually moving forward in my career. The bills were paid, things were good.
It wasn’t until I was forced to think a little outside the box did freelancing or entrepreneurship ever cross my mind. If I was smart, I would have made that switch right away, instead of spending months going on interviews. But that’s another story.
The point is, if I can become an entrepreneur and run a successful business that allows me to set my own schedule, work from wherever I want to, and explore new places all year round while continuing to earn a living, then you can, too.
And it doesn’t matter if you’re currently in a full-time job, if you have a five-year plan, or if you just went on an interview for a new role. It’s OK to change your mind, and change the path you’re on. At any age.
If you don’t like where you are, move. You are not a tree.
