5 Tips for Surviving Social Distancing, From Your Single Friend

Who would have thought that 2020 would be so …. weird? COVID 19 has really thrown a wrench into things. But don’t worry. I’m here to help. I know you’re all struggling with missing out on Happy Hour with your work-wife/husband and not being able to participate in your weekly Friday Night Catan marathon with friends. Luckily for you, 95% of the time you can find me living that independant #singlelife. So I know a thing or two about getting through this.

In all seriousness, over the years I’ve gotten pretty good at keeping myself busy and creating a life I love, without needing to rely on other people. So now I’m sharing my best tips with you, so you can all get through #socialdistancing2020 without murdering your significant other or losing your sanity.

Tip #1: Bumble

Honestly, I wasn’t going to include dating apps because first dates via video chat just seem odd. Or maybe they’ll make a good story? Either way, literally as I was writing this my phone buzzed (get it) with a notification from the Queen Bee of Dating Apps telling me Activity Is Way Up! So if you’re single, and are OK sharing a romantic-but-awkward first date via Zoom, then all the power to ya. Get swiping. It should also be noted that Bumble in particular has a Friends and Business mode as well, so even if you’re just looking for someone to talk to or connect with, it’s a viable option to help get you through.

Tip #2: Figure Out Your Passion

OK, all joking aside, this one will save you. What feeds your soul? What makes you happy even when it’s hard? What could you talk to friends (or your cats) about for hours? Find out what makes you giddy, and do it. Add it to your daily routine. Whether or not you’re isolating solo right now, try to find time to do this on your own. Really make this YOUR thing. The thing that clears your head. That grounds you. That shuts out all the noise and lets you figure out how you really feel. Figure out your passion, and do it.

Tip #3: Start a Side Hustle

Side-hustles get a bad rap. It’s like you can’t scroll through any social media feed without seeing all the gurus talking about how to quit you 9-5 and make $20,000 a month selling shampoo. But hear me out. First, it’ll give you something to do, and thanks to Google and online Marketing, it’s entirely possible to start a business and earn money from your kitchen table. Second, you can earn a little bit of extra cash. Third, it’s actually a lot of fun, and incredibly empowering to realize all the ‘stuff’ you actually know how to do (Note: This is not to be confused with Tip #2: Figuring Out Your Passion). Fourth: If you’re one of the unfortunate people who’ve lost their jobs, this might help bring a sense of purpose to your days – even if you don’t start actually selling anything or earning extra cash.

Tip #4: Get Some Fresh Air

Even in California where the entire state is on lockdown, residents are still able to get outside to get some fresh air. Go for a walk, take the pup out for a stroll, explore your neighbourhood, or go for a hike. When you are out and adventuring, remember to keep 2 meters (6 feet) between you and anyone you come across, and keep your group-size to the allowable size for your area. Step off the sidewalk, move to the side of the trail, or pause and wait for them to pass. But also, say hello! Everyone can use an extra smile these days.

Tip #5: Learn Something New

Whether it’s a new type of workout, some new recipes, or you want to up your financial prowess, learning something new has serious positive benefits on the brain. Most of us stop learning after college, but those who participate in activities that stimulate the brain can actually slow mental aging and keep cognitive function high. So order that book you’ve been wanting to read, get lost in You-Tube’s Philosophy videos, pick up cross-stitch, or download Duolingo and learn a new language.

So there you have it – five easy-peasy ways to cope with being stuck at home! And this list doesn’t even include things like getting ahead on your spring cleaning, having dinner dates with friends over Skype, fostering a pet, or committing to a new healthy lifestyle (we’re all still working toward that #summerbod2020, right?)
